The weapon and the durability of the component matters. Machete makes the best spear, but since they're rare you'll probably have to settle for a Hunting Knife with the best condition. Needless to say, you want a crafted spear in full condition. I dunno at which level of Carpentry you get that, but at Lv4 Carpentry I make 100% condition spears.
